Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae.
Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) were almost nonexistent up to the 1990s, but are today encountered routinely in hospitals and other healthcare facilities in many countries including the United States. KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae was the first to emerge and spread globally and is endemic in the United States, Israel, Greece, and Italy. Recently, NDM-producing Enterobacte...
متن کاملCarbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, U.S. Rivers
Our study was initiated by previous isolation of 30 imipenem-resistant, gram-negative rods from 7 of 16 U.S. rivers sampled from 1999 to 2001. Imipenem hydrolysis was detected in 22 of those isolates identified as Enterobacter asburiae. Random amplified polymorphism DNA analysis showed that these E. asburiae isolates were genetically indistinguishable. An identical clavulanic acid-inhibited bet...
متن کاملDissemination of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae
During the last decade, Gram-negative clinical isolates, including Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas spp. and Acinetobacter spp. with decreased susceptibility to carbapenems, have been increasingly reported in Europe. Carbapenem resistance in Enterobacteriaceae may be related either to the association of a decrease in bacterial outer-membrane permeability with overexpression of b-lactamases posse...
متن کاملCarbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae: a call for action!
Since the beginning of this century, we have been observing increasingly rapid diffusion among Enterobacteriaceae of extended-spectrum b-lactamases (ESBLs), mostly of the CTX type and mostly in Escherichia coli [1]. This phenomenon has run out of control within just 10 years, and the outbreak is now internationally identified as being, in particular, a source of community-acquired infections. I...
متن کاملRapid Detection of Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae
To rapidly identify carbapenemase producers in Enterobacteriaceae, we developed the Carba NP test. The test uses isolated bacterial colonies and is based on in vitro hydrolysis of a carbapenem, imipenem. It was 100% sensitive and specific compared with molecular-based techniques. This rapid (<2 hours), inexpensive technique may be implemented in any laboratory.
